Colonial St. Augustine

In September 1565, Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Aviles founded St. Augustine, the capital of colonial Spanish La Florida, which evolved into a multicultural hub of Spaniards, criollos, Native Americans, Africans, and mixed-race individuals. Following Spain’s cession of Florida to Britain in 1763, the city experienced a population shift as residents left and new settlers arrived from England, Africa, and Menorca. Spain regained Florida in 1783 until it became part of the United States in 1821.
